"Medical Game Jam: Medical research comes into play!" is the name of the first "Medical Game Jam" taking place on November 15th-17th, 2019, at the Hôpital de la Pitié-Salpêtrière AP-HP. Organized by ComPaRe (Community of Patients for Research AP-HP) and Grenoble Ecole de Management (GEM), it is aimed at students, patients, and professionals from the video game, scientific and innovation circles. The purpose is to design games aimed at encouraging patients to participate in medical research on chronic diseases, in 48 hours and in teams.
An initiative linking medical research, game and innovation
ComPaRe is a community made up of 30,000 patients with the goal of contributing to medical research by answering questions via the internet. ComPaRe aims to gather, in the long run, 100,000 contributing patients. Grenoble Ecole de Management develops innovative methods, based on games, to simplify complex issues making them more comprehensible. ComPaRe and GEM wished to work together to strengthen the community of patients playing the game of medical research.
A challenge in teams made up of patients, researchers and gamers
The "Medical Game Jam" is a competition in which participants create online games in a limited time of 48 hours. There will be six teams of 6 members each with different profiles: game designers, artists, developers, researchers and patients. The aim is for the teams to imagine online games which will help players better apprehend participation in medical research, while having fun at the same time. The winning game(s) will be made available to the general public to encourage participation in medical research via ComPaRe. The impact of this unique measure will be studied in order to support other platforms inspired to take a similar approach.
ComPaRe is taking this opportunity to launch a call for participation to patients receiving treatment for chronic disease. By participating in medical research via the secure website compare.aphp.fr, patients contribute to advancing medical research on their disease and get their voices heard.

About ComPaRe
Established in 2017 by ap-hp, compare, the community of patients for research gathers today over 30,000 volunteer patients across France. They contribute to advances in medical research on their chronic disease by regularly answering online surveys, via the secure platform.
Patients participate to the general group or to one of eight sub-groups dedicated to diabetes, Verneuil disease, vitiligo, chronic lumbago, chronic kidney disease, vasculitis, hypertension and endometriosis.
Four new sub-groups are currently being set up.
