Adversity quotient: a missing psychological link between talent management and corporate success

Purpose: The purposes of the study are: to analyze existing problems in the common practices of talent management; to examine the psychological link between talent management and adversity quotient; to establish an evaluation model indicating the possibility of corporate success; to identify a quantifiable indicator that predicts the possibility of corporate success. Design/Methodology/Approach: This thesis aims to discuss the theoretical link between psychology and talent management, and intends to find out a quantifiable indicator for the predication of corporate success. Therefore, both quantitative and qualitative approach will be adopted. Qualitative research will dominate the first few chapters due the necessity of reviewing related literature and discussing the theoretical relations. On the basis of literature review, the definition for the focus of this thesis will be decided: talent management and adversity quotient. Following the literature review is the qualitative analysis of problems associated with talent management practices. Based on data collected from questionnaires, a quantitative analysis will be conducted to show the consequences of the problems aforementioned. Then, a calculation method will be introduced to show how to evaluate the possibility of corporate success.Findings: It appears that the empirical evidence of this study does not strongly support the validity of the ARP, and thus overall ARP measure cannot be said to consistently predict job performance across jobs and across criterion dimensions. In terms of theory, however, there seems to be possible a pattern of theoretically meaningful relations among the concepts that influenced the formation of AQ. But further research in AQ and its ARP measure is needed to merit its applicability in work related situations. Finally, it is also worth noting that some of the personality concepts, for instance, Locus of Control and General Self-Efficacy have been found to highly correlate with Emotional Stability in past research (Judge, Erez & Bono, 2002). If findings indicate that several of these general personality constructs are subsumed by the Big Five, then perhaps future research combining facet scales of the Big Five dimensions will yield more precise results, as Hurtz & Donovan (2000) suggest.Keywords: talent management, adversity quotient, the big five, job performance, corporate success
