With over 15 years of experience as a lead ISO 9001/14001 auditor, Dr. Lloyd Walker holds a Doctor of Business Administration degree from the Grenoble Ecole de Management. In addition to his business degree, he is a graduate of Tulane University with a master’s degree in Liberal Arts. Also, Lloyd has over 15 years of experience as an international managing real estate broker. Currently, he is an ISO 9001/14001 consultant for major (hospital and automotive) clients in the Great Lakes region of the USA.
Interpretive case studies were recorded and analyzed to understand risk management in marine organizations with remote global locations. Offshore workers on 30 different vessels were surveyed on how problems are defined and solved on vessels operating in remote locations around the world. The results of the 30 case studies were triangulated with organizational management studies, simplified qualitative methods, and follow-up audit records to measure the effectiveness of the crew analyses. The maritime case studies developed a template for historical solutions and supported the adaptive learning concept with offshore workers who were empowered by the safety management system to find oil spill problems and develop safeguards. The qualitative case studies exposed the competence and willingness of frontline employees who have embraced the continual improvement concept, which has been adopted and supported by the International Safety Management System (ISM) and International Standard Organization (ISO 9000-ISO 14000), to identify and solve problems in remote locations. Literature was used as secondary data to support the concept of continual improvement in quality and safety programs.
