Lina El Bitar has been working in the educational field at the merican University of Science & Technology in Lebanon, since 2003. Over the years, she has been assigned different tasks and posts in the administration field while she was also teaching courses. Nowadays, El Bitar is an assistant professor and FHS coordinator. She also participates in the planning and organization of events taking place in the FHS and the University. She also serves as a consultant to students, offering them advice and counseling.
Family-owned universities suffer from employment based on nepotism which can jeopardise two essential elements in any business success, which are the professionalism at work and the quality of the services provided. This research studies nepotism in family-owned universities in Lebanon, the effect of nepotism on employees and students satisfaction and nepotism‘s impact on family owned universities in Lebanon.Design/methodology/approach
The research undertakes a quantitative approach using two questionnaires as instruments, which are conducted with university staff to study their job satisfaction and with students to study their satisfaction of the quality of the education and services provided by the university.Findings
Findings of the research indicate that job satisfaction among university employees is negatively affected by the lack of fairness and transparency of their employer due to nepotism. Moreover, the job satisfaction of Lebanese university employees is a determinant of provided service quality. Results confirm that students’ satisfaction is positively affected by their expectation for the quality of the service provided by their universities. Research limitations/implications
The research contributes in examining theories related to job satisfaction, as there are rare researches that study the relation between nepotism and job satisfaction, and the relation between quality of the service provided due to nepotistic practices and students’ satisfaction. However, the survey does not investigate the type of nepotism, the job description and salary of instructors in order to detect any significant differences caused by nepotism. Practical implications
The outcomes of the study show the consequences of the nepotistic practices and their short and long term effects on the business as employees and students’ satisfaction is threatened. By comparing the results between non-family universities and family universities, the processes and the system on managerial levels in non-family universities could set a model for the family universities.Originality/value
