The influential factors of Chinese manufacturing enterprises’ innovation performances from the viewpoints of innovation and open innovation were examined. Using the quantitative research method and analysis of information search strategies of Chinese enterprises, the study focused on the respective effect of a manager’s innovation intentions (MII), enterprise resources (ER), and management’s risk-bearing capacity of open innovation (RBC) on external search breadth (ESB) or external search depth (ESD); and the effect of external search breadth (ESB) or external search depth (ESD) on innovation performance (IP) with absorptive capacity (AC) as a moderator variable. The research sample included 312 Chinese manufacturing enterprises, mostly from the Pearl River and Yangtze River Deltas, which are the most concentrated regions of the Chinese manufacturing industries. The results suggest a strong managerial innovation intention and that increased enterprise resources increase external search breadth, external search depth, and innovation performance. However, managerial risk-bearing capacity of open innovation does not affect external search breadth, external search depth, and innovation performance; and external search breadth does not improve innovation performance, but external search depth and absorptive capacity can improve innovation performance. However, they cannot moderate the impact of external search breadth or external search depth on innovation performance.
