Dr. Badih Arnaout comes from a diverse background; he has led innovative multi-million-dollar projects as part of change initiatives in many countries, such as the United States, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Turkey, and the MINA area. Currently, Dr. Arnaout is the president of TCALTEK Corporation in addition to his elected post as president of the NGO, International Association for Development and Empowerment (IADE), a global non-profit organization dedicated to fighting poverty, illiteracy, and intolerance.
This research tries to explain organizational change as it relates to family-owned SMEs in Lebanon and study the value of the ways used to manage that change in a very unstable environment, and to explore how effective the tactics used to manage that change. Numerous studies have tackled small family businesses but few exits about small family businesses and change management trying to clarify how successful small family businesses are able to manage change in a very turbulent environment.
This research uses the Emergent approach under open system theory framework in order to understand organizational change as it relates to the carpentry industry in Lebanon, where and based on the outcome of the research review, Pettigrew and Whipp (1993) model is used as a base reference since it tackles both strategic and operational change in a holistic way. It is based on five central interrelated factors: environmental assessment; coherence; leading change; linking strategic and operational change; and human resources as assets and liabilities. This research selects two small family businesses in the carpentry industry located in a very hot unstable area as subjects under study, where a qualitative case study approach is used. Data from semi structured interviews, direct observations, and data analysis are analyzed using the reference base model as an initial roadmap.
In addition to the findings that both external and internal contextual factors have great influence on the ability of an organization to manage change, one key contribution is the addition of a prominent factor to Pettigrew and Whipp model: Communication Factor which is essential in the ability of the organization to manage the change process throughout the organization.
